LIAT was founded October 20, 1956 (as Leeward Islands Air Transport Services) and began operations on October 20, 1974. The company is headquartered at V.C. Bird International Airport Saint George Parish, Antigua. In addition, the airline is based at VC Bird International Airport (St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda), Grantley Adams International Airport (Bridgetown, Barbados). LIAT operates passenger services to eight destinations. The company's fleet consists of three aircrafts.

Dogs, cats, and small domestic birds can travel as checked baggage in the hold if the combined weight of the pet and carrier does not exceed 31 kg. For pets traveling as checked baggage, carriers must not exceed the dimensions of 66 cm x 60 cm x 91 cm.
