The airline was founded in 1945 as LACSA with the help of Pan Am. It later became the national airline of Costa Rica, being nationalized in 1958. In 1992 the airline was acquired by TACA of El Salvador which itself later merged with Avianca of Colombia. Avianca Costa Rica has a small fleet of A320 family aircraft operating out of San Jose's Juan Santamaria International Airport. The airline covers a wide range of destinations in the USA and Latin America.

Passengers are allowed to take on board hand luggage with a maximum size of 55 cm x 40 m x 25 cm, weighing up to 10 kg. The maximum weight of checked baggage is 23 kg (for economy class) and 30 kg (for business class), size - up to 158 cm (sum of all dimensions).

Unaccompanied minors

The unaccompanied minor service is mandatory for a child age 5-11 traveling without an adult. Children ages 12-17 are not required to travel as unaccompanied minors, but the service is also optional for this age group.

Infants

A child between 10 days old and two years old is considered an infant and may travel on a parent's lap. Medical clearance is required for the flight for an infant younger than 10 days old. Each adult passenger may only carry one infant on their lap, subject to applicable fees. However, if there is a second infant, an additional seat must be purchased

Pets

Pets can travel in the cabin with Avianca if they don't exceed 8 kg, not including their carrier. The maximum height of animals must be under 20 cm. For pets traveling in the cabin, carriers must not exceed 41 cm x 30 cm x 20 cm. Each passenger may only travel with one carrier in addition to their regular carry-on luggage. Pets who exceed the maximum weight limit to travel in the cabin can be transported in the hold instead. To qualify for transport in the hold, animals must weigh a minimum of 10 kg and a maximum of 20 kg.
