The airline was founded 1961 as Henson Aviation. It was renamed to Piedmont Airlines in 1993 by the then parent company USAir. Today, Piedmont Airlines is part of the American Eagle group of airlines and wholly owned by American Airlines. It operates a large fleet of Embraer ERJ145 aircraft from its hubs at Charlotte, Philadelphia and Phoenix.
